Chicago White Sox Secure Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Two-Year Contract.

In a major move for their rebuilding roster, the American League club have welcomed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract with the power-hitting player.

Financial Terms and Incentives

The agreement grants a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with annual pay of $16 million for the upcoming season and $17 million for the final year.

Notably, Murakami's compensation may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for earning the league MVP award.
  • $500,000 for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for finishing in the top ten.
  • An identical bonus for winning the ROY honor.

The agreement also stipulates that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his approval and allows him to become a free agent at the termination of the contract. Extra provisions include a dedicated interpreter and travel costs between Japan and the U.S..

Transfer Payment and Team Legacy

As part of the signing, Chicago owes a transfer fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's Central League. The Japanese club are also entitled to a additional payment of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever player from Japan to suit up for the South Siders, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami during their time in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, joins a emerging core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a last-place season, finishing last in the division but showing a notable improvement from the year before campaign.

Having earned league MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is renowned for a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 HRs, surpassing the single-season record for a player in Japan formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.

His last year was shortened to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Even with recording 64 Ks, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.

Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 home runs, 647 runs batted in, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Early in his career playing mainly at first base, he has spent most of his time to the hot corner.

International Pedigree

Murakami's clutch hitting were on global view during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending two-base hit that brought home Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a thrilling 6-5 win. The next night in the title match against the Team USA, he slugged a tying homer in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's subsequent championship win.

The lefty slugger is slated to be unveiled at a introductory event on Monday.
