Doris Secures Spot in Irish Squad While McCarthy Misses Out

Ireland rugby team announcement news

Returning head coach Andy Farrell has named captain Doris in his Ireland team for the fall matches, but lock McCarthy misses out.

The captain, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, recently returned to provincial training, with doubts lingering whether he will be fit to play against the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.

Lock Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions match against Australia in July.

Northern province player Izuchukwu and southern province winger Nash also miss out due to injury, while full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having a hip operation after the summer tour.

Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped member in the 34-player group, but Irish rugby authorities says uncapped provincial duo Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "cover".

After playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, Ireland will play Japan, the Wallabies and world champions South Africa in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," said the coach, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a largely familiar-looking selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will again vie for the first-choice fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming URC game at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional number 10 chosen with Farrell opting against selecting the province's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer Test wins over Georgia and the Lobos. There is also a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced group of midfield options. Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at full-back.

Outside backs James Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole fresh name in the Irish forwards. The front rower has started two of his province's three United Rugby Championship games so far and played in Ireland A's loss by the English in the English city earlier this year.

McCarthy was included in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, but did not earn a cap.

Southern province lock Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those Tests, is retained, and veteran Ulster lock Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer tour.

Conan, who started all three Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to deputise for the captain should the captain fails to recover full fitness soon enough to play New Zealand.

The national team will meet in the capital on the start of the week before flying to the US on Tuesday.
