Former Down Under Public Figure Imprisoned for Above Half a Decade for Criminal Acts

One-time lawmaker convicted of assaulting two young men connected through work has been sentenced to five years and nine months in prison.

Legal Proceedings

The former official, mid-forties, was in jail since last summer after the court found him guilty of attacking one man and sexually abusing a second person, in different occasions in over two years.

The politician represented the oceanfront municipality of Kiama in the NSW legislature from over a decade ago. He left his position as a government official when allegations came to light in 2021 but declined to leave his seat and won again in 2023.

Court Ruling

The presiding officer the court official considered Ward's disability of sight disability in the ruling and determined "no other penalty other than incarceration could be considered".

Ward, who participated via digital means at the judicial venue, will serve at no less than 45 months in custody before he can apply for conditional freedom.

Justice Shead stated the legal system needs to "deliver a strong warning to potential criminals that illegal behaviors like these will be met with salutary penalties".

Post-trial, the individual initiated a rejected legal bid to stay in parliament and resigned shortly before the congress could remove him.

Representatives has stated earlier he intends to appeal the guilty verdict.

Incident Details

The defendant's extended court case in the state court was told that he brought a intoxicated 18-year-old man to his property in the first incident and attacked him three times, despite his attempts to resist.

Subsequently, he attacked a 24-year-old government employee at his residence after an event at government offices.

He had claimed the 2015 rape never occurred, and that the other complainant was inaccurate regarding their encounter from the earlier year.

The state's attorneys maintained that striking similarities in the testimonies of the victims, who did not know each other, showed they were telling the truth.

The panel debated for three days before returning the findings of guilt.

The political exit caused a replacement vote in his constituency in September, which was secured by the challenger.
