The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

A new term came to light a couple of months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is specific to Gaza, according to doctors including paediatricians. Typically, it is rare for doctors to attend to a child who has seen the death of their whole family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about numerous doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that genocidal acts are ongoing. Officials has denied these accusations, consistent with how it disavows each claim it is charged with. But while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its professed goal of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, it seems, is what unity manifests as.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from participating in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be completely different.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. A contest that was originally built on peace has transformed into a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
