The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its current cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
